the getty - persepolis

For an exhibition on Ancient Persia, The Getty Museum in Los Angeles commissioned Monks to create a massive 360 degree experience allowing visitors to walk through a historically accurate 3D recreation of the ancient city of Persepolis.

I was responsible for directing the animation and leading the CGI, Motion Graphic, and Illustration teams across 3 time zones to ensure a cohesive final product.

Styleframes

In collaboration with Monks, I worked closely with the curators and historians at the Getty to create an experience that was both historically accurate and visually cinematic.

I directed the shots and provided creative guidance to the 3D team, who transformed a research-based base model of the city into a richly detailed and visually compelling final piece.

The creative challenge was to make each chapter as cinematic and visually striking as possible, while maintaining historical accuracy. This was achieved through close collaboration with the director and historians from the Getty Museum, carefully discussing where artistic liberties could be taken without compromising authenticity.

experience

The installation at the Getty Villa in Los Angeles was on display from April 6 to August 8, 2022, presented on a 360-degree, fully immersive screen.

It attracted over 142,000 visitors during its run. Reviving the past for a modern audience and offering a unique, immersive way to connect with history.

Storyboard

During the production process I was responsible for for providing insight on the storyboard, assessing feasibility and offering animation insight.

Bridging the step from storyboard to delivery by giving ideas for transitions and adding detail and concrete direction to the roughly laid out ideas.
